Madhya Pradesh Cycle Tour

Tour Details

The heart of India, Madhya Pradesh consists largely of a plateau streaked with the mountain ranges of the Vindhyas and the Satpuras. One half of the state is forested and offers a unique panorama of wildlife. If you are a Cycling enthusiast who loves pedaling through the thick forests in the outdoors then this tour will surely make you feel blessed. The incomparable landscapes, ancient culture and unique cuisine will surely make it a wondrous experience.

Today the fort stands virtually forgotten, isolated and decaying picturesquely in its jungle fastness. To access some of the best sculpture requires walking through jungle paths and along the rampart walls – enjoying superb views over the lovely rural countryside at the base of the hill. The one active temple – The Neelkanth Mahadev temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and harboring wonderful sculptures is accessed by a long flight of steps.

Itinerary

Day 1Delhi

After your arrival in Delhi, a private transfer will be arranged and you will be escorted to the hotel. You can spend some time to relax and get ready for an exciting day of riding the next day.

Day 2Delhi – Khajuraho – Sarai at Toria

On arrival, you will be received by our team and then you drive for about 45 minutes to the lovely Sarai at Toria. The hotel situated picturesquely on the banks of the Ken River just downstream of where it emerges from the forested hills of the Panna Tiger Reserve.
After a quick refreshment, you will go out on a game drive into this extremely beautiful park which has witnessed the most successful tiger re-introduction programme and now boats a small but growing tiger population.
In addition to these Panna has excellent numbers of leopards, wild dogs, wolf, striped hyena, sloth bears, crocodiles and the full range of herbivores – spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, nilgai antelope, four-horned antelope, chinkara gazelle and a host of fascinating smaller mammals. The bird life is pretty spectacular as well.

Day 3Panna – Ajaigarh

After an early breakfast, set off on your cycles to cross the Ken River climbing gently up the hills beyond for a couple of kilometers. This initial stretch of road passes through the forest but is crowded. However, you then reach the entrance to the Panna Buffer Zone from where you branch off along a very pretty unpaved road heading towards Ajaigarh town.

The route takes you through pretty villages, fields, forests and irrigation dams. It is truly a lovely ride. At lunchtime, a support vehicle carrying hot lunch will be arranged. Post lunch, you will continue the ride through Ajaigarh and reach the campsite between Ajaigarh and Kalinjar.

Day 4Ajaigarh - Kalinjar

After breakfast, you drive for about 40 km to Kalinjar from where you will take your cycles and ride up to the fort. Lunch will be set up in a serene corner of the fort after which the rest of the day can be spent on exploring this spectacular place.

It is said that the name Kalinjar means where ‘Shiva conquered Death and defined Time’. But the fort itself appears condemned to neglect. Ironically it is this very neglect that provides us with a fascinating and quiet day of exploration amongst the ruins; of stunning scenery, photography and walking.

You return to camp by sundown in our vehicles. The cycles will be transported back to camp in the support vehicle.

Day 5Kalinjar - Panna

Today will be an early morning, you head out on your cycles to climb out of the valley to Panna. These tracks might be strenuous but also beautiful. Upon reaching Panna you will have lunch at the interesting ‘Scottish’ mansion which belongs to Rani Divya Singh and her husband Raja Keshav Pratap Singh.
Divya is a scion of the ruling family of Panna and Keshav is a descendant of one of the land-owning aristocracy. Here we will have lunch with this interesting couple who will also share their insights on the history of this region.
After lunch, you ride out of Panna town towards Amanganj cycling for another 20 – 25 km before stopping for tea at one of the many scenic spots along this calm route. From here you will be driven to the campsite which is overlooking the Ken River.

Day 6Singhasan Padariya

After a relaxed breakfast, we ride out through the country-side to the incredible 7th Century temple complex of Chaumukh Nath at Saliha.

Here we will explore the local life and visit some ancient sites. Hot lunch will be served and in the afternoon and those who wish to cycle back to camp along a different route can do so and others can return by car.

Day 7Bijawar

Today you will be driven to the beautiful road from Amanganj to Bijawar. Here, you will pick up the cycles and ride to Bijawar. It is one of the prettiest rides through the densely forested jungles, fields, and small peaceful villages.

At Bijawar we will try and have the palace opened for lunch and visit the spectacular Hall of Mirrors. Post lunch, we drive back through the country-side and reach Khajuraho.

Day 8Khajuraho – Delhi

This will be the last morning in Madhya Pradesh where you will spend the morning to explore the temples of Khajuraho. Post lunch you will be transferred to the airport to board the flight to Delhi. Upon reaching Delhi, you will be escorted to your hotel.
